De sculpturen van Wies Scheffer zijn gemaakt van textiel. De kleuren en de dessins van bepaalde stoffen roepen bij haar de gedachte op aan een verhaal, een sprookje of een belangrijke gebeurtenis en zijn zo voor haar de aanleiding om een beeld te maken. Een frame van bestaande voorwerpen, karton of kippengaas wordt daarna bekleed met textiel. De beelden staan los in de ruimte en zijn nadrukkelijk autonoom: ze zijn eenvoudig en opgebouwd uit nooit meer dan een paar simpele vormen. Het formaat is opvallend: de beelden zijn niet manshoog, maar ook niet piepklein. Het werk roept associaties op met abstracte minimalistische beelden, maar de vriendelijkheid van de gebruikte materialen, de formaten en het bijna provisorische karakter van hoe ze gemaakt zijn geven een poëtische draai aan de strenge opbouw van haar beelden.
My sculptures are made from textile. The colors and the patterns of certain fabrics conjure up thoughts about a story, a fairy tale or an important event and this forms the basis to make an image. A frame of existing objects, cardboard or wire netting is then covered with textile. The image stand separately in the space and are expressly autonomous: they are simple and never built up out of more than a few simple shapes. The sizes are remarkable: the sculptures are not man-sized, but also not very small. My work conjures up associations with abstract minimalist images, but the friendliness of the used materials, the sizes and the almost makeshift character of how they have been made gives a poetic twist to the strict construction of my sculptures.
